Google Friend Connect is closing???

I just got an email from a fellow blogger talking about how Google is canceling GFC. Apparently the news went out back in November of 2011 and I just now heard about it.

So I went and did some research on it and found this article here talking about it.

I am very very very confused about all of this. From what I understand, because I am on blogger, I will keep my followers (which I love all 657 of you. For realz) but everyone else using GFC will lose their followers? And how is it going to show all my followers? And the blogs I follow? How is all of this going to be set up? I really don't understand any of this.

Anyone else confused and are seriously pissed off about this? Why does Google not think GFC was working well enough? I thought it was fantastic.

My real question is, can anyone answer any of my questions?

  1. For Simple explanation: If you still have a blogger blogger, you don't have to worry about it. Everything will still be the same for you. At least that is how I understand it.

  2. Part of me wonders if Google's not suffering the same backlash that LiveJournal did; people objecting to the use of the word "friend." Silly, I know, but people got their knickers in a twist about the implication that someone whose blog they like to read was their friend. It caused a huge kerfuffle some years back.

Personally, though, the lack of GFC won't bother me in the slightest. 99% of the people I follow I do through Google Reader, but I don't use GFC. Got in the habit of simply copy-and-pasting the URL into the feed reader, since half the blogs I read at first weren't on Blogger to start with. Then the habit stuck with me. I find it more convenient that way, and even if GFC stuck around, I'd keep doing it my way.

  3. As long as the blog is hosted through Blogger you're safe.. But everyone from Wordpress will have to find a new way to connect with their readers.

I have no idea what happens to the blogs I was already following through GFC... I hope I still follow them when GFC gets deleted for non-Blogger blogs.

  4. Yeah, I don't think Blogger blogs are going to be affected, but if you want an alternative, Parajunkee did a post on what you can do. :)

I love getting comments! I'm always checking to see if I have any new comments. It's actually pretty sad how often I check for them really. So if there is anything you want to say about a post of mine, please say it! I want feedback :)

As of lately, I'm making the blog a no-award blog. I love getting them and I'm always honored, but I don't have the time to do all the things that are required of them. Sorry :(
Also, my "reply" button does not seem to be working in my comments on my computer. I have to use a different computer to reply back so if I don't reply, it's not because I'm rude, it's just that I can't.
