Review: Ripple

Ripple by Mandy Hubbard
published by Razorbill
Genre: YA
$16.99 (US hardback)
272 pages

What it's about:
Lexi is cursed with a dark secret. The water calls to her, draws her in, forces her to sing her deadly song to unsuspecting victims. If she succumbs, she kills. If she doesn't, the pain is unbearable. To keep herself and those she cares about safe, she shuts herself off, refusing to make friends or fall in love-- again. Because the last time she fell in love with a boy, he ended up dead.
Then Lexi finds herself torn. Against her better judgment, she's opening up again, falling in love with someone new when she knows she shouldn't. But when she's offered the chance to finally live a normal life, she learns that the price she must pay to be free of her curse is giving him up.

My thoughts:
I was so excited to start reading this book. I read Mandy Hubbard's book You Wish back when it first came out and absolutely loved it. Loved the plot, the writing style, the characters, everything.

Which is why this book was a little bit of a let down. It took me a week to finish it because I just wasn't connecting to it. Lexi would not stop wining. I probably would be too if I killed the boy I love, but in a book, it's just not a good thing. The first half of the book this is all she does. So I never liked her much.

The second half of the book is much better. You get to see more of Lexi besides the complaining side and get to see a little more of the other characters. There was a big gaping hole I found in the story which had me constantly questioning a lot of the book and the characters.

Overall, I wish there had been a little more to the plot. There is something about Mandy Hubbard's writing style that really attracts me, but this book fell short for me.

My rating: 7/10

  1. Oh good! I'm not the only one disappointed in this one. You're much nicer in your review than I was, though. I had such high expectations and was devastated!

I love getting comments! I'm always checking to see if I have any new comments. It's actually pretty sad how often I check for them really. So if there is anything you want to say about a post of mine, please say it! I want feedback :)

As of lately, I'm making the blog a no-award blog. I love getting them and I'm always honored, but I don't have the time to do all the things that are required of them. Sorry :(
Also, my "reply" button does not seem to be working in my comments on my computer. I have to use a different computer to reply back so if I don't reply, it's not because I'm rude, it's just that I can't.
